Best Firmware for iPhone 3G

I was just wondering, as there are many apps I can no longer run because Im on 3.1.2. I cant purchase a new phone yet, as Im waiting for the iPhone 5. So I was wondering if it’s worth upgrading to the latest version. I’ve heard bad things such as it isn’t optimised for the 3G, and causes it to slow down and waste battery. Does anyone have any advice for me? Thanks

You can upgrade to 4.2.1 … It will work just fine…
Only thing that you need to know is to set it up properly and everything will be ok!

Well Ive decided to try 4.2.1…. Im trying with redsn0w and greenpois0n but I cant enter DFU mode for some reason. I got my home button fixed the other day so Im not sure what to do. Following the instructions and everything 😕
When using redsn0w I get this error –
Assertion failure
allocate (233)
sorry, redsnow must now exit.

Since you have 3.1.2 on your 3G, the easiest way to update it is to hook it up to comp, start up iTunes and then search for updates on your phone, then it should find the 4.2.1
Redsn0w is for jailbreaking the phone.

4.2.1 also i have same one on my 3GS works perfect…
BTW use sn0wbreeze if you are on unofficial carrier.

For 4.2.1 on 3G you must use redsn0w 0.9.6rc8 with 4.2.1 IPSW

Anything above 4.0 and below 5.0 should be fine on iPhone 3GS.

Ahhh I wish someone told me this earlier. Coz I was trying with 0.9.10 or something for a good hour and I kept getting that error. Anyways, now Ive jailbroken and was wondering if someone could hook me up with the best cydia sources… last time I overloaded it too much which caused Cydia to lag. Also was wondering if anyone has a good place to get iphone ringtones/sms (preferrably sms and from cydia) coz Im getting sick of the same sounds. Thanks
