Western Digital or Seagate Portable HDD?

August 3rd, 2013

Which one should I get? I used Seagate a lot back in the ’90s but I’ve heard that the Portable HDD crashes a lot, so I’m thinking of going with Western Digital. What do you guys think?

I got a Western Digital and I’ve never been happier, and never once had an issue with it!

I’d stay away from WD if I were you,Had 4 of em go bad in the last 2 years!
Also,WD always tries to force you to use their crapware (aka smartware) on their externals and it’s not always easy
to get rid of,Your also forced to install a driver for “SES Device” otherwise it’d nag you each time you hook it up,And they
hardwire the USB interface to the drive itself so you can’t hook it up as an internal at a later stage. Now about Seagate,Never had experience with these,But from what I heard,They have some of the highest failure rate around!,I suggest you go with Samsung,Check out the S2 portable line (Do note that these aren’t sold on newegg)
but I've heard that the Portable HDD crashes a lot,
Any HDD can fail at any time,Which is why you should stop being careless and actually keep backups!.

I’ve read in some reviews that the WD portable hdds USB connectors easily gets disconnected even if it’s just bumped a little bit. Is this true?
Answer #8
WD has always been a better maker of HDs than Seagate in my opinion. Never, every had a WD go bad on me, where as I have had so many of the Seagates do it.

Answer #13
It’s kind of like Nvidia vs AMD (ATI), you will always get mixed opinions, and it all comes down to warranty period and customer satisfaction.
WD would be my pick though.
Answer #14
WD is the Best !
Answer #15
Why do people buy these what’s the point?
Answer #16
Portable drives, I presume you mean non-external powered 2.5″ HDD’s – go for the Samsung M2, they are quite reliable. I have quite a few of the old WD passport drives, and no issues with them either.

Because the biggest internal drive you can get for a lappy is 1TB, and they are only 5400 rpm and slow as ~censored~.
They are very handy for transporting files.
