Is FLAC file type really worth it?

January 24th, 2020

With some new uploads in the music section being FLAC, it is really worth it for the extra file size?
Answer #1
Well it depends on you. Download a FLAC album and compare it to a regular one. If you like FLAC then download that from now on
Answer #2
If your a audiophile and you want to archive it then FLAC is definetely the way to go. If you want to listen to music on the go then just stick to V2 or if you have sensitive ears then V0. unless your a bat or something you can hear the difference between V0 and FLAC. for V2 compared to V0 i’m not very sure.
Answer #3
I will be using it for my ipod video, does that support FLAC?

Answer #5
I just tried to put a FLAC album in iTunes, it doesnt even try to convert =/
Answer #6
In my (technical) opinion it is not worth it .
Answer #7
use foobar2000 for playback on PC and dbAMP or something for converting, definetely not iTunes. i’m not sure if dbAMP does it. just google around. don’t keep asking for help when your a toddler that doesn’t help much in the forum. and yeah, it isn’t worth it.

Why not?!
Answer #10
if u have a Cambridge audio dvd player+jamo(minimum) speakers+ and a good amplifier like denon or something..then play it You will love it ,trust me FLAC and only FLAC FTW
Answer #11
That alot of if’s though!
If you have regular speakers on your pc & regular headphones on your mp3 player it’s not worth it………imo.
Answer #12
I just have regular headphones =/ Is there a reason why it is not worth it? do they not work properly?
Answer #13
regular headphones will not make a difference- try with a koss porta pro

Cos you just won’t hear the difference man.
Sure as an experiment download a FLAC version of an album you already have on your computer & see do notice any difference.
Answer #15
I downloaded one and my main music source is my iPod, I don’t really wanna stop iTunes since it’s so simple Since iTunes doesn’t recognise FLAC i’ll just stick to MP3, thanks to everyone that helped.
Answer #16
DEFINITELY!!! Flac is the only thing worth getting. When you have a FLAC, and you burn it to audio CD, you basically have the original. 1:1 copy.
MP3 is total crap when you really think about it. If you just make a huge music collection in MP3, and later get a good sterero system, or just start to care about quality, you will basically have thousands of worthless chopped up files.
FLAC or bust
Answer #17
Well, to give you more in a technical point of view. When you rip an Audio CD and convert it into mp3 for quality between 192kbps and 320kbps. You wont notice any difference since you are a human. The mp3 compression remove the details that is not perceived by a human being. So, unless you are an alien, flac is not worth it .
Answer #18
It’s opinion…and in mine, it’s not worth it.
Answer #19
well its oppinion and i love it.. i have lots of them as well, especially my bootleg collection.. the easiest way to do it is download flac files, then if you want to use them on your ipod then use dbpowerap to convert them.
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/
this way you always have the flac originals if and when you need them.. but if you aint got the means to get the full benefits of playing flac files then whats the point in your case
Answer #20
FLAC is lossless, so it is better than any MP3, regardless of the bitrate. Lossless is far better than any lossy format, regardless of where you want to play it. Download a lossless album and then convert it to a lossy format yourself.
Answer #21
agreed. but it also takes talent to be able to hear the difference between lossless and crap3, same goes for your non-musically inclined friends.
buying an expensive headphones/earphones alone wont let u hear the difference!
if you dont own and CDs and download mp3s mostly, then forget about flac, chances are u dont need it. 1 of the most stupidest mistakes of “wannabes” i know of are re-encoding mp3s to flac thinking that will “up” the quality >.>
unfortunately i know someone who tried doing that…
i miss my porta pro, it broke i really want an SR60
Answer #22
That really depends, if you have a plentiful amount of space on your Ipod or whatever you’re playing your music on, have a good headphone, and demands the best possible quality I’d say go for it! There are obviously differences from .mp3s, even if its 320 kbps, that however hugely depends on how good your hearing is, and for audiophile quality FLAC is the way to go
Answer #23
I think that only lossless formats such as FLAC make sense for backup purposes. With lossy formats such as mp3 you loose quality anytime you transcode to another format. Moreover, at some point you may start noticing compression artifacts that you didn’t notice the first times (better audio equipment, getting your hear used to it, etc). This is when you bin your huge collection of MP3’s and start looking for FLACs. That’s what happened to me.
The space argument is moot. I have my collection on $30 worth of DVDs.
However, FLAC is not handy to use on portable devices (most can only read MP3’s and the like). But you can quickly convert from FLAC to your lossy flavor of the moment in no time and very easily.
Answer #24
Is really worth it? Can the Boston Celtics play basketball? Hell yes! With FLAC, you are getting quality lossless data compression in music. FLAC reduces bandwidth and compression of stored music without sacrificing the integrity of the audio source. In these days of 1.5 GB videos, FLAC is a fraction of that and you’ll be getting CD quality sound at 46% compression. That’s great for music and it won’t take up a lot of space.
Answer #25
not worth it imo
Answer #26
when you have 10,000$ car stereo, every HQ is more then welcomed. (may post pics some time)
I rather d/l FLAC format.
just for headphones stick to mp3.
Answer #27
If you have decent equipment Amp/floorstanders or even good quailty cans , hell yes.
Answer #28
there is a substantial difference, but it will not be noticed through simple earphones, also it is not like mp3 where much quality is lost, it is complete quality, but normally half the size or less.
If you want to burn to a cd, or convert back to wave and put on cd, or use in your car etc, you will have to convert to wave and then on cd, and you will most definately notice the difference between a wave converted from flac file than a mp3, a massive difference.
but If you have the bandwidth to bother downloading em, download all the flac you can find.
if your tight on bandwidth like myself, just download hq mp3’s, there are several flac/mp3 320kbps threads if you wana check em out and see for yourself.
the people who made those threads, most well known and probobly waltzXbutler and chaosgxr’s links.
Answer #29
regular headphones will not make a difference- try with a koss porta pro
ROFL Thats a – s h i t – headphone …
The only thing what it can do is bass and the quality of the bass is also mid-low^^ its only strong, nothing else
but whats about treble?? You have to raise up the equalizer so damn high to get a little treble out of it rofl
I have a Beyerdynamic MMX 300 headphone -> http://shop.beyerdynamic.de/gaming/mmx-300.html
and that is a good headphone!!
There is no need in an equalizer, because it produces itself good bass, good mids and good treble!
And thats a quality bass not that shi.t from Koss o.O but for the cheap price of the koss porta pro it delivers good quality
The MMX 300 has also another advantage, it runs on only 32 Ohm and so you can also use it on a mp3 player without the need of an amp – and because the headphone delivers the good sound from itself you have also on an mp3 player that excellent sound
@topic:
There is a clearly audible difference mp3 vs. flac!
Very good example is Rammstein – Herzeleid, and especially the beginning of the song “Der Meister” With that song it should everyone hear clearly .. – because there its really extreme!!!
But with a Koss porta pro or cheaper headphones, or very cheap speakers, you wont hear a big or no difference
Also I have to say that you hear it more easy on a good headphone instead of speakers, because you have the music directly pushed into your ears, – you hear more details then
Answer #30
If you want to burn a CD and play it in even a half decent player FLAC wins hands down (or other lossless formats for that matter).
If you plan to only ever listen on your plastic PC speakers or an iPod with the standard earphones lossy will probably do (although it won’t be as future/upgrade proof).
It’s not worth it to skimp on hard disk space anymore these days like it was five years ago, when everybody used MP3 because disk space was expen$ive. Nowadays disk space is cheap enough that there’s no excuse to compromise on quality anymore.
Answer #31
I’ve started ripping all of my CD’s to FLAC and grabbing whatever I can. Don’t have the sound system for it yet, but I will in time. It just makes sense. In the most general terms, FLAC is pretty much a zipped WAV file – lossless in that all of the audio quality is kept, but compressed in a smaller container. People say that MP3’s are compressed, but that is not 100% true. They are raped….stripped down versions, with frequencies ripped out. I grab FLACS and use Total Audio Converter to make variable bitrate mp3’s 192-320k for my iPod. I have a separate 300GB HDD that I am storing all of my FLAC’s in. It may not matter to most, but I prefer to have HQ audio archived and make whatever quality I want from that. Just my opinion.
Answer #32
imo it depends on your speakers/phones if they are great you’ll hear a differende, otherwise it will be the same
Answer #33

Well now that’s a lie, there is a difference, and the difference is big if you have a good stereo. We are though talking about hifi, and not walmart quality and price here.
Most people might not feel / hear the difference, but some of us does. In my opinion it is definitely worth downloading FLAC files.
