Upgrading Vista basic on laptop

July 25th, 2016

Hi all As you can see im a newbie here but hopefully somone can help me.
I have a new laptop with vista home basic on. Im thinking i want to download vista home premium and upgrade rather than format and reinstall.
Is this possible ? I have downloaded a few vista disks but they alway say this will delete my old windows version and move to a temp folder on my drive. My problem is i only want to upgrade not do a full install.
Hopefully this make sence.
Many thanks

It’s possible, but are you sure you downloaded an upgrade vista disc and not a retail disc?
Answer #2
Thanks for the reply kidd, Im not sure as i have never seen a post labled vista upgrade disk im sure what i have downloaded is the full vista.
Answer #3
Yeah, but most discs here are retail discs and you need an upgrade version. But if I understand correctly, you have just bought it so you probably don’t have any files on the laptop? Why not just install it with the retail disc instead of upgrading, doesn’t take that much extra work.

The reason why i want to upgarde is the drivers, I didnt state in my first post but i did install a copyed premium when i got it and had a hell of a time finding the drivers for it, in the end i ended up formating and reinstalling to factory with the recover disks i got with it.
Answer #5
what laptop do you have? Cause the drivers should be easy to find on the manufacturers website.
Answer #6
upgrade should be done from within windows, and not while booting.
Answer #7
That doesn’t matter, when booting from a vista disc you get the option to either upgrade or do a fresh install, but for that, you’ll need an upgrade disc.
Answer #8
Not sure of the model nbr i know its a hp laptop, the drivers are on there website but woudnt work when i tried last time (bet your thinking im stupid now)
I have done a quick search on here for vista upgrade in the apps section and have not come back with any posts only info and stuff.
Is there such a thing as a copyed upgrade disk ? i have tried upgrading by launching the disk within windows but it still only gives me the option of freash install and moving my old windows to windows.old file.
Answer #9
The modelnumber should be somewhere on the laptop. And your best shot in getting an upgrade disc is torrents.
Answer #10
Just remove the previous version and install a new one. Re-installing any programs shouldn’t be a problem. And you could simply copy your personal files to an external HDD or a DVD disc(s) to save them for later. Instead of killing yourself over upgrading with a lame OS like vista. Anyways, hope this helps and good luck.
