[Solved] Upgrading my current (gaming) computer, need help.

September 3rd, 2013

Ok so I want to upgrade my current computer: I want to make sure I have upgrade options for the future.
This is what I will use from my current computer:
– QuadCore Intel Core i7 860, 2933 MHz (22 x 133) (I can still use this on my new motherboard I hope…)
– NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 (1536 MB)
– Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1000W
– Optical drive: HL-DT-ST BDDVDRW CH10L (I have no idea what brand it is).
– 4 times Samsung 2 GB DDR3-1333 DDR3 SDRAM (M378B5673EH1-CH9) (8GB total).
– No need for a HDD, I have a 1.5TB internal and a 3TB internal (and some other external ones).
– Monitor, Keyboad, mouse also not needed.
Ok so this is what I need:
– a new case
– motherboard
– new cooler for my processor other then the stock one.
– (optional: SSD)
This is what I’ve been looking at:
Motherboard:
– Gigabyte GA-X58A-OC iX58, SATA600 RAID, USB3.0
http://www.4launch.nl/shop/#p-4-productid-112150
OR
– Asus P7P55D-E Deluxe iP55, SATA300 RAID, USB3.0
http://www.4launch.nl/shop/#p-4-productid-085617
Other suggestions are welcome.
—————————————————————————
Case:
– Cooler Master Big Tower HAF X eATX No PSU, Window
http://www.4launch.nl/shop/#p-4-productid-093681
—————————————————————————
Cooler for my i7:
no idea yet.
Ok so tell me: will everything I chose here fit together.
This will be the first time I build my own computer but I think I’ll do just fine.
everything I choose will be ordered from the site I gave links from.
Thank you in advance,

- QuadCore Intel Core i7 860, 2933 MHz (22 x 133) (I can still use this on my new motherboard I hope...) It’s a dead socket. You’d be hard pressed to find a decent motherboard for that.
- motherboard Why?
- Gigabyte GA-X58A-OC iX58, SATA600 RAID, USB3.0 Incompatible with the i7 860.
It’s stupid to upgrade a motherboard on an already dead socket. For the price of that X58A-OC you can get a new SB CPU and motherboard that wipes the floor with your current motherboard/CPU.
How much money do you want to spend on the cooler?

this, a price range of what your willing to spend will greatly help.. other then that, we can give suggestions and hope your willing to spend the cash on what we suggest but its a whole lot easier with a price range

Ok I understand, can you suggest me another CPU and Motherboard that are compatible with my other hardware and would be nice for future upgrades (let’s say 2 years)
and would it be good to take an i7 again ?
-paroxysM^ replied: - motherboard Why?
My computer was originally an HP, but the Graphics card was bad, so I installed a GTX 480, but It barely fits the case and the motherboard,
also the motherboard has no OC possibilities / cpu fan control etc (it’s a low end motherboard). And I will be using the motherboard to rebuild my old computer
(motherboard blew up in a thunderstorm).
Then my PSU was not powerfull enough for the GTX480 so I had to buy another one, but again it didn’t fit my case so my PSU is on top of my computer with tie wraps (yeah I know it’s bad : / )
results, horrible airflow and way to high temps (let’s say 43°C for GPU and 47°C for CPU on iddle, about 85°c both while gaming). That’s why I want to (re)build it myself now.
-paroxysM^ replied: How much money do you want to spend on the cooler? Not too cheap, not too expensive, somewhere in the middle I guess
(I have no idea what they cost to be honest).

The maximum I want to spend on everything together would be between € 800 and € 1000. A bit higher is not a problem but you get an idea what I want to spend on it now.
(lower prices are welcome as well). And yeah suggestions are always welcome. That’s why I posted it here <3
Another question: Is the case a good choice or not.
Sorry for the late reply, couldn’t reply because I was at work.
Thank you again for the help guys, you’re awesome.

You can get an i7 2600K/2700K along with a decent Z68 motherboard and and maybe some memory, a cooler and case for around 60% of that budget. The rest you should save as there’ll be some awesome new video cards coming out early next year.
Not too cheap, not too expensive, somewhere in the middle I guess HR-02 Macho and Cocage True Spirit are great mid range air cooling options. If you want better you can spend some more and get a D14 or Silver Arrow or Phanteks or etc etc. I’d get a Thermalright myself because of their godlike fans.
Another question: Is the case a good choice or not. It’s fine. I have it myself. It’s just a bit loud for my tastes.

If i was you i would look at buying a new case and motherboard with SLI capability with a new cooler for overclocking.
And a second hand GTX 480 to go in SLI as you can get them for absolute bargain bin prices.
Might be the most cost effective way to get a big performance boost in terms of games.

Ok so this would be better right ?
Case:

Cooler:

CPU:
http://www.4launch.nl/shop/#p-4-productid-104486
Motherboard:

Would be € 762 altogether.
Thanks for the fast replies
Again tell me my mistakes pls.

The NH-C14 is not as great as it’s upright brother while being around the same price range. You don’t need to go that much on the motherboard. The Extreme4 or P8Z68-V is fine for what you need.
Answer #8
That’s the wrong motherboard type if you are looking to keep your current CPU.

P55 motherboards are rare these days. I haven’t seen one in a store in ages.
Answer #10
True that, ebay is your friend for that socket.

I’am not keeping my current CPU, i’am going with the Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz.

Does the P8Z68-V support SLI ? Then I would rather take the Asus Maximus IV GENE-Z iZ68: Price is in between both then.

Yeah but it’s the only one I see Socket 1155 support. The D14 says Socket 1156.
And sorry, I’am not ignoring your help, I’am just making sure I don’t choose wrong Appreciate your help m8.
Answer #12
What’s the main intention for the rig?
I was thinking it was for games, is that right?

Yes.

MIVGZ has less features than the P8Z68-V and pretty much any ATX board in the price range. MIVGZ is an mATX board and while it’s a great board unless you want to go small form factor you’ll be better off with an ATX board in the price range. Make sure to get the GEN3 version if going with the ASUS board.

1156 and 1155 share the same cooler pin holes. It’s fine

Yes it is.

Ok I understand, I didn’t see it was micro ATX, my fault.

Then I’ll go with D14
What about Thermal paste ? it’s included right ?
Ok so this would be better right ?

Would be € 648. Anything else I’am missing for my build?

What about Thermal paste ? it's included right ? You’ll get a free tube of Noctua’s NT-H1 paste with the D14.
Would be € 648. Anything else I'am missing for my build? Nah you’re pretty much set. Though if you’d want you could always get a bigger memory kit or something like an SSD.
Oh and swap out the motherboard for this one. It’s GEN3 (PCI-E 3.0 ready)

Edit: Wrong link. Fixed.
Answer #16
Thx again, I will take that motherboard instead. The SSD will be for another upgrade (maybe the prices will drop while I wait xD). Graphics card(s) can also wait.
I’ll order it probably tomorrow evening. I’ll continue reading the topic so replies are still welcome.
