Quadbooting. Advice in what OS’s & Partition order

July 25th, 2013

Hi
I’m having no luck here.
I’m trying to install xp, win7, linux mint cinnamon, and pingee on my netbook.
What is the best way to start?
I tried resizing the partitions first, but it didnt go so well.
What method would you use, and what order would you install these ‘os’s?
thanks

Answer #1
You should really check into VM’s…
Answer #2
no thanks..
its a netbook.
VM’s would be awful on such a device.
Answer #3
Give this a look at, might help you get started:

Answer #4
ive got three primary partitions made..(using acronis)
but the damn windows xp wont recognise my hard drive
says i have none.
All the partitions are ntfs, primary.
Should i mark them all as ‘active’?
or doesnt matter?
i marked one partition as active before (the one i was trying to install xp on), but no joy.
Maybe the problem is that my netbook or xp booter has now decided to consider my usb stick as the only drive space available for os instalation. This never even came uo in the past.
perhaps its getting in the way.
please advise.
this is getting damn tedious
cant even get started on my first OS instalation
Answer #5
windows 7 uses AHCI in bios for sata , xp doesnt see this mode without sata drivers , it will blue screen each time it tries to load xp
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8057-dual-boot-installation-windows-7-xp.html is something i found usefull
after you have slip streamed sata drivers into your xp install (if its the first os you install ) split your hdd up into 4 partitions , install xp on c: , then install each os you want on the partition you want them on
you might need to edit your boot menu , try using easybcd
Answer #6
thanks fo rlooking my friend, very interesting.
Whats strange for me though, I’ve formatted the hard disc time after time, and then tried to install xp first.
It still isnt installing.
But it worked fine the other week..
There must be something stuck very deep in the drive, or a small system file that just wont delete.
I think im just going ot have to strike xp off my OS list on my netbook.
Damn shame, because its fast.
Oh well..
Windows 7 and linux mint & pingee it is then.
Bye xp.. you served me well
Answer #7
yes like i said you need to slipstream sata drivers into your XP install or XP will not see your HDD , this has nothing to do with your actual HDD but a setting in bios
you can format the drive as many times as you like but it still wont work unless you do the above (slipstream sata driver into xp install )
But it worked fine the other week..
i had a client who bought a new laptop ( not from me ) it was working fine for 12 months , then one day it started to bluescreen , he took it back to the company he bought it from and they told him the machine was useless and it would be cheaper for him to get a new laptop so he did , $2500 later he decided to come and try my services for other reasons ,but he also gave me the laptop that was bluescreening , i checked the setting in bios for ide/ahci and sure enough it was set to ahci , i change it back to ide and now more than 2 years later it still works fine
My point with the above is things like this just happen , one day they are fine and the next its all messed up for no apparent reason
i would much rather XP than linux , not much use for me ( apart from web applications ) and it can be very difficult at times
( and sorry i was editing my last post as you replied )
Answer #8
well, i like xp..
My idea was to run xp and win 7..
then have a little bit of disk space just to mess about with linux.. see how it went.
so im a bit confused here…
its as easy as changing the bios to get windows xp to install??
I thought i needed ‘raid drivers’ installed via the windows boot up.
something im not sure i can even do on a netbook.
Answer #9
well yes ( and no lol ) it is that easy but you wont get windows 7 and xp to work together this way
to get them to work together you need to slip stream sata drivers into your xp install ( you can do it via usb(f6) or in your install cd ) ( i would install win 7 first , just easier i think )
as for raid well that depends on your netbook setup
Answer #10
but i had xp, win7, and two linux’s all working together earlier..
i think i put in xp first, then windows 7 automatically recognised the old xp as well as the new.
then i put in linux, and it was all ok..
so why now do i have to slipstream raid drivers??
i really dont understand that
changeing a bios setting i can understand, perhaps it got changed somehow.
But xp all of a sudden missing drivers from its software??
i cant see it.
but anyway, there is nothign in bios about ide/ahci
plus, as i say, im not even sure its possible to install raid drivers on a netbook usb xp install. and i dont have sata drivers anyway.
i think i pressed f6 earlier, and it prompted me to put a cd in.. whch i dont have.
Thanks
Answer #11
raid is only needed if you have a raid setup , im not suggesting to install raid , only if you have it should you install it
and yes you have missed that setting , it is there in bios ( could be set to auto, i dont know )
But xp all of a sudden missing drivers from its software??
i cant see it.

yes its very possible for that to happen , more than likely it’s been done inadvertently
ok another thing would be to mention you might not have any sata drives in your netbook , could be an ide hdd
but that wouldnt really explain why xp wont see your hdd
Answer #12
im lost man, lol
ive been all over bios
cant see anythign like that.
if i can just put it back how it was before, i can install xp first, then 7, adn it will be ok i think
I do actually use xp..
and another reason is becasue my wifi keeps dissapearing on windows 7 , another problem ive failed to resolve, even after asking and enquring many times.
its just the HO mini wifi i think, its rubbish.
But its fine on xp..
but now i can get the damn xp installed.
I think if i can just get my xp boot to recognise my hdd as it once did, it will be ok..
but there is no option in bios, or as u say, ive missed it
but ive been everywhere
Answer #13
ok can you tell me the model number of the netbook ? ( i prob shoulda asked for it before )
Answer #14
hp mini 210 1011-ea
thanks
it has a smallish bios i think
no such options in there as far as i can see
Answer #15
is there any setting in bios for sata ? if there is disable it ( anything that mentions sata )
another issue ive had is usb drives , remove them and try install again ( with just your cd drive and hdd , disable card reader if you can and any other storage type devices ) and make your partition for xp smaller than 100gb
i had a look on hp’s site and there is no mention of ahci driver for xp for this netbook
ill keep looking for other solutions , there seems to be alot of them lol
Answer #16
problem is, i dont have a cd drive..
thats why its extra hrd to resolve.
Thres nothign about sata, or anythign about hard drives at all..
only the boot order.
I have to do everythign via usb instalation., as you know, netbooks have no cd drive.
So i have to have the usb or card reader as 1 and 2 in the boot order.
( i have onyl got a 1gb usb stick, and often need to use the card reader instead)
Answer #17
sorry double post
Answer #18
as i dont have one in front of me to look at its hard to see whats in the bios
sorry but everything is still coming back to ahci/ide mode
read this http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/50282-34-tutorial-installing-home-professional-flash-drive
its also mentioning to make your usb drive the first boot device
Answer #19
thanks
I cant find that bios option tho, lol
What i will try is, delete the card reader boot option, and just leave the usb.
im prepering my usb stick now, and if i disable the card reader, perhaps that will help.
last attempt, i think
if it fails, i will put win7 in, and just have to make do with thet terrible wifi.
Update.
No joy..
i dont know whats happenes.
windows 7 or linux has changed sumethinginternally in my netbook.
oh well..
no xp then
just the nice looking, but slower and crappy wifi’s windows 7.
or the slick, but rather limited linux..
Thanks much for all your efforts
Answer #20
did you try to set bios to optimized defaults ?
dont know if that setting is there
Answer #21
there was a default setting yes..
didn tthink of that..
lol
i may try it out.
ive allready installed windows 7 now, and a linux…
but mayeb worth a shot.
thanks.
Update:
I’m afraid that didnthelp either.
I heard ‘GParted’ disk manager may help… IF t is hard drive issue after all.
but perhaps not lol
Anyway.. I may have to live without xp.
Thanks for all the suggestions
Its definately the sata driver issue.
I managed to get sata drivers into an xp instalation, and it started to install, but i think the instalation was corrupter, so it crashed.
I basically just need to find a good working xp with sata drivers allready added.
i will post a new thread specifically asking fo rthat.
thanks for pointing me in the right direction
