How to pay an article writer?

September 5th, 2013

If I were to hire someone to write an article for my company. What is the process of paying them per article? Do I just send money to them using paypal? What if they have a bank? Also, how does this work in regards to taxes. I don’t understand how this “paying” process all works. Just trying to compare to a big company that has multiple employees.

You should really utilize Google for what it is to answer most of your question…

You are hiring them, you set your company policies (obviously within your local laws).

1 employee or 100, everything is the same. If you hire someone to write an article for you, they will not be your employee. They will simply be doing contract work for you. There is no such thing as a sales tax on service, or is there a sales tax on merchandise from out of state transactions.
You will record the money you paid them, because at the end of the year you will subtract that from the money you made to determine how much money you pay taxes on. They will record they money you gave them, so they can pay taxes on it at the end of the year.
You will be in a big mess if you don’t know the basics of running a business and don’t hire a bookkeeper. Only way to escape trouble with the government is to leave the country =/

Thanks, I understand the process now, but I’m still not sure on “how” to pay someone. What form of payment do people usually take and how would I do this. If I were sending money through paypal, would a direct payment be sufficient enough, or do I have to go through a specific type of process.

Surely all that would be decided between you and the person you are hiring. If you set yourself a policy of only paying by one method, then you limit your options.
The easiest way is to source whomever you want to hire, and ask them how they want to be paid. As long as you have a papertrail for the money you have sent, and an invoice from them for the work, then you will be fine.
PS – If someone tried to pay me for service through Paypal, I would tell them to go and find someone else.

They send an invoice with the article and you send them a cheque, basically..

The question is, what is your process? I normally e-mail mine in a .pdf file.

How else do you expect to send a check?

I have no idea how to make the process. Can you tell me how you do your process. I don’t know where to start.

Getting paid by cheque is very, very, old school.
Most people use BACS (Banks Automated Clearing System) or CHAPS and pay it direct to the person’s bank account.
@jasonxman, you don’t send the invoice, the person who has done the work sends an invoice to you, and then you pay it. Most legit companies won’t pay invoices for at least 30 days, when they do their BACS run.
