How is it so slow?

July 28th, 2013

I have tried downloading a few different things, all show, either in IDM, chrome download (ctrl+j), Downthemall! on firefox, all show speed<100Kbps. Normally I get ~800, sometimes, around 1.3Mbps. It is midnight here, no one else in my house has their computer downloading something, or even turned on. My switch maxes at 10Mbps (not much, but doesn’t affect me much. I pay for 25Mbps from my ISP, and have not received anything about going over the bandwidth limit or speed reduction (I never torrent)
Ideas? please help

Answer #1
Where are you trying to download from?
Answer #2
If you’re talking about rapidshare, they have throttled speeds for free users to 30kbs.
Don’t really know what other sites speeds are.
My connection maxs out at 30kbs regardless of who i use as it’s capped at that speed.
Used to be 15kbs so i should be grateful of speed increase lol.
Answer #3
Use Speedtest to check your speed..
http://www.speedtest.net/
Answer #4
possible reasons
1. your ISP is throttling your speed.
2. the website your downloading from is capping the speed.
Answer #5
I get wild fluctuating when i do a speed test.
But my upload speed is somewhere nearly 3 times faster than my download speed.
Can’t figure that out.
Answer #6
i did speedtest i got 22Mbps dl and 3MBps up
theres no reason for my ISP to cut my speed i havent down much in the past months
Answer #7
Is your system virus free?
Answer #8
From where you downloading those stuffs?
Answer #9
Like the above posts said, it’s probably the server you’re trying to download from, they’re probably capping the download speed. Try downloading a file from a different site or filehost to test your download speed.

Contact your ISP and explain your situation. It can be a problem with the service and they will help you!
Answer #13
Yes, would be a good idea to contact your ISP.
Tell them you get excellent speed with Speedtest, but not with others..
Answer #14
fair enough thanks everyone
Answer #15
Try downloading from a fast server, like Ubuntu ISO
You don’t need to download the entire file, just start it and wait for the speed to level out. It’s more accurate than any speedtest site

I’ve been suffering a similar problem for the past fortnight.
I have been trying to download from RapidShare. The Firefox download manager kept telling me the download speed for the file is 100 kb/s (for example) and that the file will take a remaining 35 minutes to completely download. Yet it takes about 10 mins or more for the percentage counter to increase!
It’s had me absolutely baffled and I haven’t fully downloaded anything since this started.
I’ve tried using Firefox, Chrome and IE, all equally unsuccessfully. And I’ve tried using a different computer.
The problem seems to be all filehosts, (but I have only repeatedly tried RS as that is where the files I want are hosted) yet not Youtube.
I have just observed a seemingly non-progressing download attempt using Windows Task Manager and the network activity is pulsing – ie, the traffic is in regular spikes (speed peaks at approx 230 kb/s) every 5-6 seconds then instantly falling back to 0 kb/s between pulses.

It’s normal that you can’t download from Rapidshare, they changed their policies and now it only works good for premium users.
Answer #18
It’s being capped so managing the server can be easier and cheaper (cause they don’t need as many servers). You may get a faster speed at different times because the servers aren’t being used as much, thus giving you more speed.
Yes, rapidshare sucks now. I hope they close down like MU, corporate scums.
