Can I mix RAM?

August 13th, 2013

I did google this and got conflicting answers , i just installed 7 on my older computer (acer e360 amd 3800 2.6 g with 1 gig of ddr ram) it runs fairly well but a little slow switching windows so i thought i would add a stick, BestBuy told me i needed to add 2 that “match” or they might conflict……i called bull-shizzle on this and left without any to research it a little more……isnt all ram kinda the same (or close enough for this old beater)…?
Answer #1
For dual channel mode you need matched pairs, but otherwise it’s not necessary, you can still mix ram sticks, they will just work in single channel mode, but you should not even notice the difference in real situations, only in benchmark tests.
Answer #2
Yes and many people are mixing memory as we speak.
It works.
Answer #3
If this web site is right , this is what i have……
Memory Type: DDR PC3200, DDR (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 4GB
Slots: 4
Each memory slot can hold DDR PC3200 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*
so i just go to BestBuy and use my gift card and get me some……Thanks for the replies…….

Try to get RAM that matches your current RAM.
Use CPU-Z to see what you got installed ATM.

Yep, get 1GB, as close as you can to the original and put it in the same colored slot.
(you will probably then have a stick in slot 1 and slot 3).
This should then run in dual channel..

Before i lay on my back (and probably throw it out) and wiggle back under the desk upside down and half sideways and unhook everything, will that extra gig help speed me up or is my processer holding me back, it will be at least a year before i can get a new system so id like to ride this one a little longer…..
Answer #7
Won’t say it will be lightning , but yes it should help
I run a P4 with 2GB and that’s plenty.
